Vermilion County, Illinois and North Carolina Quakers - Possible Mills relative

The back of this picture does not say who this man is, but the photography studio stamp on the back reads "Vermilion County, Illinois". The photo may have been passed down to Sarah Elizabeth Mills who was the daughter of Lydia Ruble-Mills born 04 Aug 1827, daughter of Henry Ruble and Mahaila Martin. Lydia was married to Isaac Joseph Mills born 03 Mar 1825 in North Carolina, he is the son of Peter Mills born 02 Mar 1800 in North Carolina and Mary Jane Stanley. Peter is the son of Benoni Mills born bt 1760 in Deep River, Guilford County, North Carolina, married to Mary Thompson also born in Deep River, Guilford County, North Carolina. 

My ancestors from these families were New Garden MM Quaker families and found in Guilford County, North Carolina, Perry Twp., Wayne, Indiana and a few of Benoni's children, namely James Mills born 06 Nov 1796 in Deep River, Guilford County, North Carolina, was also found living in Sidell, Vermilion, Illinois after 1840 until his death on 25 Mar 1869 in Sidell, Vermilion, Illinois. 

It is impossible to know who the man is in this picture by doing basic genealogy, but it is most likely a close relative to Sarah Elizabeth Mills, daughter of Isaac Joseph Mills. 

Greenberry Martin Ruble (also known as Greenbury Ruble) son of Henry Ruble and Mahala Martin

This is a picture/postcard I received from the Frank Crooks' collection of family pictures that he passed down to me. 

This postcard was sent from a niece of Lydia M. Ruble-Mills, daughter of Henry Ruble and Mahaila Martin and wife of Isaac Mills. 

The postcard is from Philomath, Benton County, Oregon.  

After much research I found one niece of Lydia Ruble's living in Philomath, Oregon. I confirmed this with newspaper articles posted in the Chariton Herald Patriot which is now digital. 

Ref: Chariton Herald Patriot - Thurs. Oct. 28, 1909 page 3: Amanda is listed in the  as visiting from Philomath, Oregon. She is Amanda Newth. Article reads:  "Mrs. T.N. Primm enjoyed a visit of a few days last week from her sister, Mrs. E. Manely, of Lucas and cousins Mrs. Amanda Newth of Philomath, Oregon."

Ref: Chariton Herald Patriot, Dec. 21, 1922, page 2: "Friends and relatives here received the news of the death of Dr. Newth, which occurred at his home November 29th, at Philomath, Oregon. Mrs. Newth will be remembered as Miss Amanda Ruble and who lived near Lacona for several years. Her many friends here extend sympathy to her."

Lydia is mentioned as "Aunt" in the postcard below and the person the niece refers to who is "Pa" which if "Pa" is in reference to Amanda's father, this is Lydia's brother Greenbury Ruble also known as Greenberry Ruble.

RUBLE, GREENBURY farmer section nine post office Lacona. Born July 31 1833 in Warren county Indiana. In 1851 came to Iowa with his people who located in this vicinity. They were among the very first settlers of the township. He spent his boyhood in farming and at the age of twenty three began working at the carpenter trade which he has since followed in connection with farming. He was married in 1863 to Miss Nancy J Rodgers of Ohio. They have five children living Mary E Alta E Laura B George O and Manda (Amanda). Three are deceased. He was enrolled October 31 1864 in company C 4th Iowa infantry and was discharged in June following. He owns a farm of 143 acres which he is steadily bringing under cultivation Mrs Ruble died May 5 1876.

Greenberry Ruble is buried in the Arnold Cemetery.

Thursday, October 12, 1893

DIED - Mr. Green Ruble, formerly of Liberty township, and was buried in the Arnold cemetery last Wednesday, October 4.

Mr. Ruble moved to this state from Indiana in the year 1850 and was a respected citizen of this township until the spring of 1887 when he, with his family, moved to Dakota where they have been living until his death, which occurred October 1, 1893.

He was a soldier in the war of the rebellion, serving his country faithfully till the close of the war.

He leaves five children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss. His wife died several years since. May God comfort the bereaved ones.
