New photo found of George Washington Lovell and Amanda Carolina Mullens of Whitebreast, Lacona, Warren, Iowa.

It has been several years that I had a glimpse of this black and white photo that is about 4x4 and has been stored away in a box in my grandmother Edna Lois Lovell Brower bible with my sibling. It wasn't until this year that I acquired this photo and laid it upon my scanner to get the highest quality digital imaging I could get and found that this was not just an OLD PHOTO! I was able to identify my great grandfather William Andrew McClelland Lovell and some of his siblings, then realized this was none other than the family of George Washington Lovell and Amanda Carolina Mullens. Look past the line of the family to the doorway and you will see someone standing in the doorway, I wish I knew who that was!

This photo has been digitally colorized so that I could bring it to life. I've learned through the countless years I have spent trying to trace down bits and pieces of our family tree that there are several relatives who have photos like these, but either are not capable of handling new technology or simply don't have any interest in sharing our history or maybe they just don't know who any of these people are!

I personally want to see my ancestors, so please do share and if you are in Iowa, I encourage you to reach out to me so we can discuss a plan to scan more of our family photos. I have posted many photos of our families on my blog and publicly on Family Search so that our families can enjoy seeing the faces of our ancestors. As a genealogist, it pains me to see countless old photos that end up in vintage/antique stores or trashed because nobody claimed them. Let's give them a name and a face!

George is in the derby hat and his wife Amanda next to the small children. Amanda appeared to me from other photos to be a tall woman, but is rather tiny and petite in this photo, as well as George!

From comparing other family photos, I have the following names of everyone in this photo and if I'm incorrect, please let me know!

From right to left: William Arthur Lovell (not an actual blood child, but raised by George and Amanda as their own. I don't have proof to this, but read that he was a son of one of Amanda's sisters), next to him is Robert Thomas Lovell, then it's my great grandfather William Andrew McClelland Lovell, Amanda Carolina Mullens Lovell, Ida Florence Lovell, Emma Ada Lovell, George Washington Lovell, and lastly George Webster Vorhees Lovell.

Estimated year photo was taken, between 1875-1879 as Ida appears to be approx. 5 years old and Myrtle May has not yet been born, nor Katherine, nor James Elmer Lovell. At this time, I am uncertain if the photo was taken in Missouri or Whitebreast, Lacona, Iowa. They did live in Missouri somewhere between 1875-1879, as also noted in Amanda's father Robert Mullen noted in his will that was written in 1875, his daughter Amanda Lovell living in Missouri at the time.

At the age of eight years he came to Iowa with his parents in a covered wagon, and the remainder of his life was lived in this vicinity, with the exception of about eighteen months spent in Missouri. He returned to Iowa with his parents and grew to manhood at the present family home where he had lived the past forty years.

He was united in marriage to Clara V. Vickroy on Feb. 28, 1889. To this union thirteen children were born, six of whom, with the wife and mother preceded him in death. Mrs. Lovell passed away on October 5, 1931.

Seven children are left to mourn his passing. They are George W. Lovell, of Chariton; Mrs. Elsie M. Clark, Dennie H. Lovell, Mrs. Gladys Goering and Mrs. Louie B. Williams, all of Lacona; Roy D. Lovell and Mrs. Edna L. Brower, both of Lucas. There are also 39 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Elmer Lane, of Des Moines; two brothers, Elmer Lovell and George V. Lovell, both of Millerton, and other relatives and a host of friends and neighbors.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Chas. Mattox of Beacon, were held at his late home Monday afternoon at two o'clock and burial was in Arnold Cemetery.

Our home will be lonely without him.

Heaven will be nearer since there he's at rest;
Away from life's cares, it's trials, it's sorrows.
Beckoning, "Come to the land of the blest."

Mrs. Lois Brower sits amid her toys, dolls, dresses and assorted novelties that will be shipped to Indian tribal reservations in Wyoming and Nevada for Christmas if she can come up with the necessary postage. She is wearing a Shoshonean tribal necklace, bestowed on her by her adopted family in Wyoming, which makes her an "honorary" member of the tribe.

Mrs. Edna Lois Brower of Chariton sits in the midst of the clothing and bedding that she plans to personally deliver next month to the Navajo Indians in Arizona. Mrs. Brower plans to leave Dec. 10 if she can find financial support for the journey. Mrs. Brower, a former missionary to the Indians, is also collecting food to take to the Indians for their Christmas dinner.

Most people who knew my grandmother remember this bus. She made a bus full of toys for the Navajo Indian children in Arizona. Grandma would drive this bus all the way from Iowa to the Arizona reservation and would let the children come on the bus and pick one toy.
Rest in Peace Grandma. I miss you dearly!

Children & Grandchildren of William Lovell and Clara Vickroy

Raymond Virgil Lovell, the driver in this photo, was my grandmother Edna Lois Lovell's older brother. On the back of the picture is a description of the photo written by my grandmother Edna.

Both Raymond Lovell  born 02 Jun 1900 and Edna Lovell born 25 Apr 1914 were children of William Andrew McClelland Lovell and Clara Viola Vickroy.

Alice Lovell who is sitting on the hood to the left side is the daughter of William Chester Lovell born 15 May 1898 and Marjorie Angie Boston. William Chester Lovell is also a son of William Andrew McClelland Lovell.

As described below, Alice Lovell's birthday is 05 Apr 1921. On the right fender is Ferdinand Goering born 09 Nov 1920, son of George Ferdinand Goering and Gladys Caroline Lovell born 14 Mar 1895. Gladys is also a daughter of William Andrew M. Lovell. William Andrew McClelland Lovell and Clara Viola Vickroy

This is the home of my great grandparents, William Andrew McClelland Lovell and Clara Viola Vickroy.

William is one of 13 children of George Washington Loveall/Lovell and Amanda Carolina Mullins. Clarla Vickroy is also one of 12 children of John Wesley Vickroy and Margaret Louisa Cain.

In the lower left corner you will see the 62 acres of land for Elias Mills, born 26 Mar 1839 who was the son of Peter Mills and Mary Jane Stanley. Nearby is also 72 acres of land for George Washington Loveall/Lovell, who was born on 10 May 1836 and married Amanda Mullins. George passed away in 1895, so the land records were probably not updated when this plat was done. His son William Andrew McClelland Lovell owns approx. 100 acres in several sections. Also nearby is H. Rube who I'm assuming is Henry Ruble who passed away in 1870, in this area. This land for H. Rube is later deeded to his daughter and my 2x great grandmother Lydia Ruble-Mills by 1915. On 40 acres adjacent to the land currently described as H. Rube 40 and near William Andrew Lovell's property is Lydia Ruble's son Joseph "Joe" Mills who was married to Myra Linson and then Mary Jane Fantzwere.

This section of property boarders Lucas County, Iowa.

14 years after the last plat map was produced in 1902 for Warren County, Iowa, we now see the property that was once owned by George Washington Lovell, is now owned by his son William Andrew McClelland Lovell.  The property that was once listed as H. Rube (probably Henry Ruble) is now owned by his daughter Lydia Ruble-Mills.
