William Andrew McClelland Lovell

Chariton, Iowa

August 26, 1941

William A. Lovell, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Washington Lovell, was born in Carbon, Indiana, on December 8, 1863, and died suddently at his home near Lacona on Saturday, August 23, 1941, at the age of 77 years, 8 months and 15 days. Death was due to a heart attack. 

At the age of eight years he came to Iowa with his parents in a covered wagon, and the remainder of his life was lived in this vicinity, with the exception of about eighteen months spent in Missouri. He returned to Iowa with his parents and grew to manhood at the present family home where he had lived the past forty years. 

He was united in marriage to Clara V. Vickroy on Feb. 28, 1889. To this union thirteen children were born, six of whom, with the wife and mother preceded him in death. Mrs. Lovell passed away on October 5, 1931. 

Seven children are left to mourn his passing. They are George W. Lovell, of Chariton; Mrs. Elsie M. Clark, Dennie H. Lovell, Mrs. Gladys Goering and Mrs. Louie B. Williams, all of Lacona; Roy D. Lovell and Mrs. Edna L. Brower, both of Lucas. There are also 39 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Elmer Lane, of Des Moines; two brothers, Elmer Lovell and George V. Lovell, both of Millerton, and other relatives and a host of friends and neighbors. 

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Chas. Mattox of Beacon, were held at his late home Monday afternoon at two o'clock and burial was in Arnold Cemetery. 

Our home will be lonely without him. 

Heaven will be nearer since there he's at rest;
Away from life's cares, it's trials, it's sorrows.
Beckoning, "Come to the land of the blest."

Edna Lois Lovell-Brower

Edna Lois Lovell was born on April 25, 1914 in White Breast Township, Warren County, Iowa. Her father was William Andrew McClelland Lovell and Clara Viola Vickroy. Edna was the youngest of 13 siblings.

Grandma Edna Lois Lovell on the farm in White Breast Twp., Warren County, Iowa. She was bout 16 years old here.

Mrs. Lois Brower sits amid her toys, dolls, dresses and assorted novelties that will be shipped to Indian tribal reservations in Wyoming and Nevada for Christmas if she can come up with the necessary postage. She is wearing a Shoshonean tribal necklace, bestowed on her by her adopted family in Wyoming, which makes her an "honorary" member of the tribe.

Mrs. Edna Lois Brower of Chariton sits in the midst of the clothing and bedding that she plans to personally deliver next month to the Navajo Indians in Arizona. Mrs. Brower plans to leave Dec. 10 if she can find financial support for the journey. Mrs. Brower, a former missionary to the Indians, is also collecting food to take to the Indians for their Christmas dinner. 

Most people who knew my grandmother remember this bus. She made a bus full of toys for the Navajo Indian children in Arizona. Grandma would drive this bus all the way from Iowa to the Arizona reservation and would let the children come on the bus and pick one toy. 

Rest in Peace Grandma. I miss you dearly!

This is the only picture I have of my grandmother Edna Lois Lovell and grandfather John Howard Brower together. 

Susan Isabell Brower and Gilbert Samuel Pierce

Gilbert Pierce and Susan Brower; Child, uncertain if this is Warren D. Pierce. 

This is an old cabinet card photo that was handed down to me by my father's cousin Frank Crooks.

The brooch Susan is wearing is now in my possession. It's a beautiful painted ceramic of a woman. This is likely a mourning portrait pin of her sister Martha Brower or Eliza Brower, both who lived until in their 20's and died before 1891. Susan's mother Sarah Jane Woods Brower died in 1891, but this doesn't resemble her. 

Susan Isabell Brower (pictured above) was born 07 Apr 1855 in Louisa County, Iowa. Her parents were Jeremiah John Brower born abt. 26 Aug 1815 in New York and Sarah Jane Woods born 23 Oct 1828 in Lawrence County, Ohio. 

Picture is dated 1891, assuming that is the year of the photo, which would mean that the husband in this picture was Gilbert Pierce, however, I'm uncertain which child this is as Warren was born in 1884 and should have been in this portrait. Census records have Susan giving birth to 5 children and only 1 child survived, which is Warren. 

Susan was married three times; her first husband was Henry Stevenson from Lucas County, Iowa. They were married in 1878 the same year Henry Stevenson passed away. Her second husband was Gilbert Samuel Pierce (pictured above) born 18 Jun 1837 in Erie County, New York. 

Gilbert Piece and Susan had 5 children, 3 of them are named at this time, one was named Bessie and she was born about 1883, died before 1890 and then their only surviving child was Warren Daniel Pierce who was born on 04 Jun 1884 in Taylor County, Iowa. His father Gilbert Samuel Pierce passed away in 1897.  His mother Susan lastly married Edwin Coleman on 25 Oct 1900 in Nodaway, Adams, Iowa. Edwin Coleman was born 09 Oct 1851 in Vermilion Co., Illinois.

Raymond Virgil Lovell, the driver in this photo, was my grandmother Edna Lois Lovell's older brother. On the back of the picture is a description of the photo written by my grandmother Edna.

Both Raymond Lovell  born 02 Jun 1900 and Edna Lovell born 25 Apr 1914 were children of William Andrew McClelland Lovell and Clara Viola Vickroy. 

Alice Lovell who is sitting on the hood to the left side is the daughter of William Chester Lovell born 15 May 1898 and Marjorie Angie Boston. William Chester Lovell is also a son of William Andrew McClelland Lovell. 

As described below, Alice Lovell's birthday is 05 Apr 1921. On the right fender is Ferdinand Goering born 09 Nov 1920, son of George Ferdinand Goering and Gladys Caroline Lovell born 14 Mar 1895. Gladys is also a daughter of William Andrew M. Lovell. Merle Croy born 13 Oct 1920 and Burle Croy born 08 Mar 1922 are children of Homer Croy and Margaret Marie Lovell born 15 Apr 1902. Margaret Marie Lovell is a daughter of William Andrew M. Lovell. 

James Franklin Mills

James Franklin Mills was born 14 Oct 1847 in possibly Warren County, Indiana or Penn, Jefferson Iowa. He is the son of Isaac Joseph Mills born 03 Mar 1825 in North Carolina and Lydia M. Ruble born 04 Aug 1827 in Belmont, Ohio. James Franklin Mills married Lydia Nyswonger on 12 Mar 1871 in Lucas County, Iowa. His wife Lydia Nyswonger was the daughter of James Nyswonger and Elizabeth Lowery. 

I do not have a death date for James Franklin Mills at this time. I found his wife remarried and living in King County, California after 1878.  I believe she remarried twice, once to a Mr. Bush and the other to a Mr. Crye. 

James had two children with Lydia; Elizabeth Lydia 'Eliza' Mills born Abt. 1871 and Joseph Mills b. Abt. 1874. 

This framed picture of James Franklin Mills was given to my father as is with a small note tucked up in the back of the frame. It appears to read that James was presenting this photo to his baby sister Sadie (Sarah Elizabeth Mills who was born 1866), but it could read Lydia Ruble who was his mother. He was 19 years old in this picture and it's dated 1866. 

Vermilion County, Illinois and North Carolina Quakers - Possible Mills relative

The back of this picture does not say who this man is, but the photography studio stamp on the back reads "Vermilion County, Illinois". The photo may have been passed down to Sarah Elizabeth Mills who was the daughter of Lydia Ruble-Mills born 04 Aug 1827, daughter of Henry Ruble and Mahaila Martin. Lydia was married to Isaac Joseph Mills born 03 Mar 1825 in North Carolina, he is the son of Peter Mills born 02 Mar 1800 in North Carolina and Mary Jane Stanley. Peter is the son of Benoni Mills born bt 1760 in Deep River, Guilford County, North Carolina, married to Mary Thompson also born in Deep River, Guilford County, North Carolina. 

My ancestors from these families were New Garden MM Quaker families and found in Guilford County, North Carolina, Perry Twp., Wayne, Indiana and a few of Benoni's children, namely James Mills born 06 Nov 1796 in Deep River, Guilford County, North Carolina, was also found living in Sidell, Vermilion, Illinois after 1840 until his death on 25 Mar 1869 in Sidell, Vermilion, Illinois. 

It is impossible to know who the man is in this picture by doing basic genealogy, but it is most likely a close relative to Sarah Elizabeth Mills, daughter of Isaac Joseph Mills.
