Civil War Vet Dies at Soldiers' Home

Mistaking a poison for medicine, Edward Tigh, 87, Omaha Civil War Veteran, died late Sunday at the Soldier's home in Grand Island. He was conscious until shortly before his death, and explained what occurred.

Mr. Tigh had resided at 8924 North Thirty-Sixth Street until last fall. His wife, Elizabeth, was notified of his death in Omaha today and immediately left for Grand Island. During the Civil War, Mr. Tigh served with the Sixth Missouri Infantry. He had lived in Omaha almost fifty years, and worked at the plastering trade until last fall.

Robert W. Tigh, a resident of Omaha for thirty years, died recently. Mr. Tighe was born at **Baratree, MO in 1868, where he grew to manhood. In 1893 he married Miss Leila Anderson of Dubuque, Iowa, in Omaha. He is survived by his wife, his father, 73 years old; two sons, Watson, who is still in the service, having served in the One Hundred Twentieth heavy artillery overseas and Clark, state engineer at Milford Soldiers home, and Mrs. Charles Adamson of Florence. The funeral services were held from the Hanscom Park Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Tigh was a member of the Modern Woodmen, also the O.P.I.A. He was greatly beloved by a large circle of friends.

**Although obituary reads Robert Tigh was born in Baratree, MO, I believe he was born in Baraboo, Sauk, Wisconsin about 1869. Census record for 1870, shows he is 1 year old and living in Baraboo, Sauk, Wisconsin.

Mrs. Robert Tigh Grows Ten Foot Six Inch Corn on a City Lot

Leila M. Anderson wife of Robert William Tigh (My 2nd Great Grandmother)

Evening World Herald, Omaha, Friday, July 10, 1914
(Omaha, Nebraska)

Corn ten feet six inches high, and growing taller all the time. How's that for a contribution to the bumper crop? Grown by a woman too. Mrs. Robert W. Tigh, 2375 South Twenty-eight street, is the proud producer. She did the whole job herself -- spaded the earth, planted the seed and keeps the dirt turned over between the rows and the suckers picked off the stalks.

Her cornfield is in the lot next to her house. The place was full of weeds and she promised the owner that she'd clear them off if he would let her use the space for corn. She planted ordinary food corn that she bought at the feed store for the horse. The ears of corn are about a foot and a half long now. There's no telling how big they'll be when they're ripe. Mrs. Tigh is having the time of her life watching that corn grow, measure's it every day. She had no idea it would be so big. She's always loved gardening, though, and every summer raises enough struck for her own family and has some left to sell the neighbors.

"Women wouldn't get nervous if they'd do this kind of work", declared Mrs. Tigh. "It's healthy to get outdoors and dig in the dirt. Sometimes I go to visit, but when the women start to gossip about this and that, I have to run home and get out in my garden and work".

John Brower in Cass County, Indiana -- Jacob Brower of Miami County, Indiana

Found another confirmation that there was in fact a John BROWER who lived in Cass County, Indiana in 1842.

Sale of Delinquent Lands

For Taxes in Cass County, Indiana, The following list contains the Delinquent Lands, Town Lots and as returned by the Treasurer of Collector of Cass County, Indiana on the 3rd Monday in February, 1842, for the non payment of taxes for the year of 1841, which tracts are severally charged with tax, interest and penalty for 1841 and also for the tax for  1842:.

Name: John Brower, Acres: 160, Description: S. E. Quarter, Section: 10 or 16 (hard to read), Town: 27 Range: 2E, Diq. Taxes int. & pc for 1841: $7.25, Taxes for 1842: $5.92, Total Taxes: $13.17: Township 27, Range 2 East.

NOTES: From History of Cass County, Indiana: From the Earliest Time to the Present; Clay Township is located in Township 27 North, Range 2 East. Hugh Woods, who is also the grandfather to Sarah Jane Woods, wife of Jeremiah Brower is found living in Twp 27, but in the 1-E Range and moved from there after 1837 to Twp. 26. I also have found in 1853 a property tax record for my Jeremiah Brower living in Clinton Twp, land not listed, but property such as livestock, etc. listed as being taxed. Assuming he was renting the property he lived on? Same township as his wife Sarah's family lived in.

New information found 12/25/2019 -- There is a mortgage property for this land by a Jacob Brower from Miami County, Indiana. The mortgage is between B.B. Doty and Jacob Brower, the date of the mortgage is 1839 and recorded 1840, said land is 160 acres, Section 10, Township 27. The problem I continue to run into is that these Brower's are or may be the same Brower's from Preble Ohio who migrated to Miami, IN and apparently do not descend from Adam Brouwer. We know that my 4th Grandfather Jeremiah lived in Cass County, Indiana as far back as 1844 when he shows up in the newspaper for a telegram notice in Logansport. This may also mean that the John Brower I found in the census records may not be the father of my 4th grandfather, but rather this same person who either is named John Jacob Brower or Jacob John Brower of Miami, Indiana, or this Jacob Brower is not at all related to the same Brower's from Preble Ohio that lived in Miami, Indiana. I cannot find a John or Jacob Brower, born about 1770-1780 with a son born about 1810-1815 and a daughter born about 1815-1820 (assuming both listed on 1840 census records are his children).

Research Required: Who is this John Jacob Brower or Jacob John Brower from Miami County, IN living in Logansport, Cass County, IN 1839-1850?

Only a few months prior to Dr. Stumbaugh committing suicide he was assaulted and injured. Is this all coincidental? Was Dr. Stumbaugh involved in some shady business with the wrong people or was he staging his first attempted suicide and failed?
